INTERCLUB NEWS
The Michael Moore squad had a fantastic win over New Forest on Sunday last. The team under the watchful eye of Brian McCormack and his able assistant, Dermot Cunningham had four matches away and three at home.
At the home venue were Anthony Lynch, Liam Lynch and Adrian Stewart. The lads fought hard with Anthony winning on the 12th and Adrian losing out. Liam Lynch was 2-down on the 17th tee-box but managed a great recovery to win on the 19th. They don't call him Golden-Irons for nothing.
Playing over at New Forest were Ger Peyton, Stephen Brennan, Micheál Farrell and Pat Fay. Micheál Farrell was on fire and reeled in his opponent on the 13th with absolutely consistent shooting from tee to green. Ger Peyton went down in his match while Stephen Brennan secured a great win on the 17th to get the crucial 4th match. Pat Fay, who was three down through thirteen, was 1 down playing the 16th when called in, and was in flying form following a great day in Trim on Saturday. Rumour has it that Pat had to sing Amhrán na bFhiann himself on Sat night because even the bar-man was gone home by then....
The lads are now in the semi-final of the competition and the battle for places is heating up...CONGRATULATIONS AND CELEBRATIONS
Big celebrations among club members of late... First Kieran and Evelyn celebrated their 20th Wedding Anniversary on Captain's Day. Then Brian McCormack aka "The Rooster" hit 65 on Tuesday last. That's Years...not strokes. Not sure if the free bus pass will get him from Rhode to Daingean on a Sunday morning...but the new trolley Maureen bought him was looking good at his society Captain's Day on Saturday last. Brian heads up Seery's Society and presented some lovely prizes on the occasion of his Captain's Day.Sun 04/07/10

Last Thursday, the format was Stableford. Brendan McGough shot an excellent 22 points to top the leader board. Damian Cunningham was a close second with 21 points, just pushing Mick Carey into 3rd place on a countback. Local man Niall Smyth also shot 21 points and took 4th spot on a further countback. In fifth place was Adrian Stewart. The Donegal demon had 20 points.
SENIORS
The Senior gang have been on tour a couple of times lately with about 40 players per week turning out for the craic and the golf. This week they returned to base and held a 2-ball Scramble. With excellent scoring, the winners on the day were John Lowbridge and Martin G. Kelly.
If you are in the mature category i.e. 50+, why not consider coming along on any Tuesday and join in the great atmosphere.
GENT'S CAPTAIN'S PRIZE
Last weekend saw the first qualifying round of Liam Scally's Captains Prize. Without doubt the timesheet was full to capacity with over 150 members taking to the course on Saturday and Sunday. Many thanks to the stewards who kept things running so smoothly and on time. Well done lads.
About thirty of the lads played on Saturday and definitely got the best of the weather. Anthony Lynch blazed a trail to set the benchmark by shooting a 66 nett. Needs to keep form for next week though.. a lot of lads are hot on his heels. Included among these are Larry Giles, Ger Peyton, Dan Shaughnessy and Alan Dalton all of whom carded 69 netts.
On 70 nett and in with a good shout are Clive Ledwith, Gerard Colgan and Brian McCormack Snr. And Brian will do some crowing if he's on the top perch at the end of the day.
Indeed the scores showed some interesting statistics:
1) Out of all the entrants, only 10 beat the CSS of 71.
2) Seven members neglected to sign their cards. These included a past captain and a couple of leading junior members....
3) One player put two balls in the canal on the 9th and still finished with a 72 nett. Obviously he didn't let his Guard down on the back 9....
4) Another player was 1 under par gross on the 17th tee box and finished bogey, dbl bogey. He's still well up the leader board.
5) Leading the past-captains section is Donal Scally with 71 nett, but..
6) No past captain has ever won a Captains Prize... now could that monkey be busted this year?
The qualifying stages are Strokeplay over 36 holes, 18 last Sunday and 18 next Sunday. At the end of the 36 holes, the top 21 players will play out 9 holes for the honour of winning the Captains Prize 2010 in honour of Liam Scally.
Happy golfing lads.....no pressure.

This is an excellent camp and is well run by Deloreen, Jackie and all the helpers. If you find yourself available to help out please approach the top table and make yourself known.
It is important to note that the coaching camps have been held in Castle Barna for many years now and some of our best golfers have started here. Indeed some of these lads are now helping out with the coaching, showing that success breeds success.

JIMMY BRUEN QUALIFIER
In glorious sunshine the course hosted the qualifying stages of the Jimmy Bruen on June 19th and 20th. Stewarded by the Leinster Branch of the GUI, competitors from eighteen clubs did battle to be the regional qualifiers. With the course in magnificent condition, as remarked by all of the visiting teams, it was going to take some great scoring to reach the semi-finals on Sunday morning. Early birds New Forest set the marker by posting a score of 331 strokes. This was closely followed by three teams on 333 with a countback needed to decide the eventual semi-final places, after Kilcock topped the leader-board with 328 strokes.
Onto Sunday morning and it was leaders Kilcock against the mighty men of Esker Hills. With no quarter given or expected this was a ding-dong battle. Kilcock edged out the Esker men to progress to the final.
In the other semi-final the Lakelands duel was between Moate and the lads of New Forest. In this one it was New Forest that got through with a number of former Castle Barna members on the team. David Bollard, Mervin Daly and John Daly all played excellent golf with young Paul Daly in the pairing that decided the result.
Sunday afternoon and the sun blazed for the final. But the New Forest guys were equal to the pressure and played fantastic golf to emerge victorious over Kilcock when Fintan Carton holed a putt on the 18th from off the green to secure the honours. Well done to all the lads and we wish you the very best of luck in the rest of this prestigious competition.
To all who played, caddied or managed on any team well done and Kieran, Evelyn, the staff and our Captain, Liam Scally would like to thank you for your wonderful comments on the condition of the course on the weekend.
GRAY CUNNIFFE INSURANCES SINGLE STABLEFORD
On Sunday June 20th the competition was an 18H Stableford sponsored by Gray Cunniffe Insurances Ltd.
Mullingar man, Vivian Quinn has been showing some great form recently and may well be one to watch out for in the Captains Prize which begins next Sunday. Vivian shot 42 points to win the overall on Sunday with two points to spare from his nearest contender.
In second place was young Gareth Mann with 40 points. Gareth is an excellent young golfer with a lovely temperament and is a shining example to our junior members.
The categories are always closely contested and on this occasion they went to Martin Comerford, Seamus Feerey...again, Jimmy Gallagher and James Conway. The junior section was won by Philip Joslin with an excellent 40 points.
Results:
1st Vivian Quinn (11) 42 points

SINGLE STABLEFORD
Last Sunday over one hundred golfers played for the Lady Captain sponsored Single Stableford. Camillus "Milly" McCauley was in overdrive as he went around the course with a fantastic score of 45 points to top the leader-board. In second place was Oliver "the younger" Dixon, with an excellent 43 points. In third it was Gareth Murphy, the Newbridge hotshot who, despite having had 32 shots shaved off his handicap already this week, shot a wonderful 43 point to be 3rd on a countback.
The categories as always were a close affair but in Category 1 the cream rose to the top. While his dad and his brother might be sweet on the stage, Robert Hogan can hold any course in the palm of his hand when he is on form. Rob shot 41 points of a handicap of 5 to take the Cat 1 prize.
Category 2 was won by Kevin McGrath from the Déise, cousin of hurler Ken. Kevin had 39 points to top Cat 2.
Stephen Brennan has the best rescue wood in the club; although why it's called a rescue I don't know because he's never in trouble... He took Cat 3 with 39 points.
It was a bad Sunday for Laois on the GAA pitches but Clonaslee man Tom Flynn took some silverware home on Sunday night following his win in Category 4 with 40 points.
The junior section was won by Brian McCormack Jnr with 41 points of his handicap of 2. that's a great score of -3 gross.
Results:
1st Camillus McCauley (17) 45pts
2nd Oliver J. Dixon (18) 43 pts
3rd Gareth Murphy (18) 43 pts
Cat 1 Robert Hogan (5) 41 pts
Cat 2 Kevin McGrath (12) 39 pts
Cat 3 Stephen Brennan (18) 39 pts
Cat 4 Tom Flynn (22) 40 pts
Jun Brian McCormack (2) 41 pts
MONDAY SOCIAL GOLF
Thank God it's Monday....now how often do you hear that? Mondays are the days to be social and Castle Barna is the place to be. Every Monday evening the lads and lasses take to the fairways for mixed social golf and the craic, as they say, is only mighty.
On June 14th a huge number turned out for the 3 person team event. The results were as follows:
1st Jeanette McCormack, Bríd Connor and Deirdre Garry
2nd Helen Galvin, Carmel Lawlor and Brenda Colgan
The golf was followed by a presentation and some refreshments and definitely this is a tonic to be recommended for the Monday Blues....
On Monday June 21st the format was a two-person team event and again the members turned out in numbers. The winners on this occasion were as follows:
1st Lady V/Capt. Eileen Wynne and Bríd Connor
2nd Capt. Liam Scally and Eamonn Lawlor
3rd Brenda Colgan and Carmel Lawlor
THURSDAY OPEN.
The Thursday Open is played in Stableford format over 18 holes. This event is attracting large numbers each week but there is always room for a few more. So if you're available on a Thursday why not come for the Open and stay for the crack.
On Thurs June 17th Tony O'Toole Jnr was the leading scorer. Tony posted an excellent 44 points to show that sometimes it does pay to listen to the daddy. Tony Snr has also been known to produce the goods when required...
Last Thursday it was the turn of Shane Daly to top the podium. Shane shot a great score of 40 points to edge David Brazil into 2nd place with his 39 point total.
THURSDAY 9-HOLE
With the long evenings and excellent weather continuing, the Thursday 9-hole competitions are in full swing. On Thurs, June 17th the format was a single Stableford and the man to the fore here was Vincent Murphy. Vincent had a steady 21 points to be first over the line with Pat Rogers taking the runner-up spot with 20 points.
Last Thursday, the format was the dreaded v-par but this was no problem for the winners. Vincent Murphy was in the winners' enclosure for the second week running when he finished the 9 holes in +3 to win on a countback. Indeed all three top scores were +3 and it took a lot of complicated cross checking to ensure that the result was correct. Well done to the stewards for getting it right. In second place, on the countback, was Brendan Scally and the third spot went to Jimmy Slattery.
SENIORS
On Tuesday June 15th the senior members held a 2 ball scramble. The winners on the day were the legendary Seán Carthy and the Lake County supremo, Mick Lennon.
Last Tuesday the competition was a fourball betterball. The winners here both hail from the Lakes with Frank O'Hara teaming up with Vivian Quinn to secure the top spot.
