JORDAN GETS THE FORMULA RIGHT FOR PRESIDENT'S PRIZE 2010
Kieran Mangan's Presidents Prize was up for grabs on Sunday last in Castle Barna and the format was 18 holes of Strokeplay, with those making the cut going back out for a further 9 holes of Strokeplay.
With the first players out at 6.30 am, and the last out at 2pm, the course was packed to capacity. President Kieran was on hand with goodies for all the entrants and the re-cycling bin must be full of plastic bottles now. Despite the sunshine, the course played tough with the blue tees back to the limit and the rough was tough also. CSS eventually ended up at 71 and the cut-off was 74.
In the 18 holes Michael Flynn was the early leader with Noel Baker, Liam Scally and Ray Scally putting a bit of pressure on too. Jimmy Donoher shot 68 nett of (17) to get himself in the running and former club Secretary, Padraig Egan (14) shot a 67 nett.
For the gross prize, three players were tied after 18 holes. Aidan McCormack, Stephen Egan Snr, and Dan Shaughnessy were all in with 79 gross.
And so to Team Jordan... Martin, not Eddie, carded a 66 nett to be in front by a nose going into the 9 holes. Would he hold on or would the chasing pack and the pressure get to him?
In the 9-holes, James Kelly held on to take 4th nett while Padraig Egan secured 3rd nett. This was a great performance from Padraig and it is nice to see him back in the winners' enclosure. Daniel Shaughnessy nosed in front to take the 1st gross with 114 shots for 27 holes or seven over par. Stephen took the 2nd gross with 117.
But by far the best mover of the day was Paul Coffey. Having just made the cut, and eight shots behind the front runner, Paul got himself to within half a shot of the top spot with a 102.5 nett for 27 holes.
The 18 holes leader, Martin Jordan, did enough to ensure that he remained top of the leaderboard at 8.30pm when the last card was in. The President's Prize for 2010 goes to Martin Jordan a most worthy winner.
Results:
Winner: Martin Jordan (20) 102 nett
2nd Nett Paul Coffey (19)  102.5 nett
3rd Nett Padraig Egan (14) 103 nett
4th Nett James Kelly (14)  104 nett
1st Gross Daniel Shaughnessy (5) 114 gross
2nd Gross Stephen Egan Snr (7) 117 gross
Leading Qualifier James Donoher (17) 68 nett
Committee Prize Capt. Liam Scally (13) 105.5 nett
Junior  Richard Coffey (20) 42 points

The presentation night afterwards was a great success with Dave Peyton providing the music. This man has played all over the world and it's great to see him gigging locally now and then.
During the prize giving, Kieran Mangan, Club President, spoke highly of all those who helped make the day a success, and he congratulated all the winners. Captain Liam Scally and Lady Captain, Angela Lynch presented outstanding prizes on the night with a beautiful array of crystal on display.

CONGRATS
The Lady President's prize was a closely fought battle and the eventual winner was Catherine McGrath, who put together a great 27 holes to secure her 2nd successive President's Prize. Well done Catherine.
Derek Hannon and Michelle Conway walked up the aisle on Friday last. Either we're going to see less of Derek at the club, or maybe Michelle might join the ladies.
Alan Leech missed the President's Prize on Sunday as he and his good wife recently celebrated the birth of twins.
We didn't see much of Mick 'Butch' Brereton on the course this week either....the young lad must be keeping him awake all night. Or maybe Butch is keeping the wee lad awake.

INTERCLUB NEWS
The Michael Moore team played Esker Hills on Saturday last in the semi final of this competition. This is the furthest we have ever progressed and the lads were in form to reach the final. However the lads from Esker came and conquered and thereby progress to the final on Saturday next in Portarlington. All matches were played in a very sporting manner both at home and away and the players, caddies and managers were all well looked after as usual. This team have played well and taken on some of the finest clubs like New Forest, Mount Temple and Mountrath and while it is disappointing not to get to the final, the full squad can take great pride in getting so far. Well done to manager Brian McCormack and his able assistant Dan Cunningham for taking the team to this stage.
Next up is the Clerkin Shield at Ballinlough Castle G.C on Sat, September 18th. This is a one day event for adult golfers with a handicap of 21 or over and the format is single Stableford. The manager for this team is Kieran McGurran.
The Offaly Championships will be hosted by Birr G.C. on Friday October 1st. We are defending champions here and we will be lining out in an attempt to do the double. Once confirmation is received from Birr, a team sheet will go up on the notice board. Managers for this one are Noel Mooney and John M. Lynch.

RUMBLE FOR CRUMLIN
15/08/10

On Sunday morning last the golfers of Castle Barna took to the course in large numbers to support the annual Musgrave Challenge i.e. the Rumble for Crumlin. This is a very worthy event close to the hearts of many members and it is great to see the support that the event gets. With the spectacular weather over the weekend, and most of the holidaymakers back in vogue, scoring was bound to be good.
Out at first light were the early birds, Aidan Nolan, Turlough O'Neill and Shamie Feerey. These lads are always among the first on the tee box any Sunday morning. However they always hit the ground running and on Sunday they combined well to score 84 points and set the bar for the rest of the day.
Vice-Captain, Kieran McGurran was in the company of the brothers Quinn, that's Murty and Vivian to their friends. These boys are well used to teaming up for events such as this and together they put together an excellent score of 86 points to be the overall winners on the day.

                   Results:

1st                  Kieran McGurran, Murty Quinn & Vivian Quinn                 86 points

2nd                 Aidan Nolan, Turlough O'Neill & Shamie Feerey                 84 points

COMING NEXT SUNDAY

Next Sunday will be a Single Stableford. The sponsors for the day will be ET Embroidery, run by Edmund and Martina Scally in nearby Kilclonfert. Edmund is a brother of our captain, Liam and ET will embroider logos etc. on club or society clothing, so please keep them in mind when you do business.

 PRESIDENTS PRIZE

The Presidents Prize takes place on Sunday week, August 29th and the timesheet is now in the clubhouse. President Kieran Mangan will be on hand for the day and might even give us a bar of a song at the presentation that night.... The format as always will be single Strokeplay over 18 holes for qualifying, with those players who make the cut going back out for a further 9-holes later in the day.
To win this prestigious competition, players must be members for over a year and must have three qualifying singles cards in the club since April.

OPEN SINGLE THURSDAYS

The turnout for the Thursday singles continues to be good with a number of visitors playing each week. Last week we saw a couple of the Killeigh society lads out on the course and by all accounts the pre-outing practice was of benefit to John "Dusty" Dunne.....
The winner on the day was Shane Daly with 39 points, an excellent score which was matched by Shane Francis and Philip Joslin. A countback was required to separate the top three.

THURSDAY 9-HOLE COMPETITION

With Strokeplay being the format for the evening and the Michael Moore squad out practising, the numbers for the 9-holes were down on Thursday evening last. Taking great advantage of this was our Treasurer Martin Furlong (18) who had a 32 nett only to be beaten into 2nd place on a countback by young Daniel Molloy (24). Daniel also had a 32 nett and has shown great improvement in his playing thanks to the Junior Summer camp, which has been running successfully at the club over the summer. Much praise must go to all at the club for the massive effort they put into the running of the camp.

 INTERCLUB NEWS

The Michael Moore squad play Esker Hills in the semi final of this competition on Saturday August 28th at 3.30pm. We have four matches at home and three in Esker Hills and all support will be greatly appreciated as we bid to win what will be a very tough fixture.

INTERCLUB NEWS
The Michael Moore squad had a fantastic win over New Forest on Sunday last. The team under the watchful eye of Brian McCormack and his able assistant, Dermot Cunningham had four matches away and three at home.
At the home venue were Anthony Lynch, Liam Lynch and Adrian Stewart. The lads fought hard with Anthony winning on the 12th and Adrian losing out. Liam Lynch was 2-down on the 17th tee-box but managed a great recovery to win on the 19th. They don't call him Golden-Irons for nothing.
Playing over at New Forest were Ger Peyton, Stephen Brennan, Micheál Farrell and Pat Fay. Micheál Farrell was on fire and reeled in his opponent on the 13th with absolutely consistent shooting from tee to green. Ger Peyton went down in his match while Stephen Brennan secured a great win on the 17th to get the crucial 4th match. Pat Fay, who was three down through thirteen, was 1 down playing the 16th when called in, and was in flying form following a great day in Trim on Saturday. Rumour has it that Pat had to sing Amhrán na bFhiann himself on Sat night because even the bar-man was gone home by then....
The lads are now in the semi-final of the competition and the battle for places is heating up...

CONGRATULATIONS AND CELEBRATIONS

Big celebrations among club members of late... First Kieran and Evelyn celebrated their 20th Wedding Anniversary on Captain's Day. Then Brian McCormack aka "The Rooster" hit 65 on Tuesday last. That's Years...not strokes. Not sure if the free bus pass will get him from Rhode to Daingean on a Sunday morning...but the new trolley Maureen bought him was looking good at his society Captain's Day on Saturday last. Brian heads up Seery's Society and presented some lovely prizes on the occasion of his Captain's Day.
