Fathers Day Single Stableford Sponsored by

Cuddy Kitchens and Carpentry.

There was a good turnout for today’s competition with most fathers getting the day off to concentrate on their golf. There were young and old fathers about and it was one of the older Dads that won out on the day.

That honour went to Ballinagar man Brendan Scally with a score of 45 pts. It was a younger father in 2nd place with 43pts Micheal Farrell who was later seen in the clubhouse been treated to a slap up meal for his efforts.

The category winners were cat 1 - young Dan Molloy (8) - 41pts (not a father) cat 2 - Alan McKnight 42pts Cat 3 - Andy Dowdall 42pts Cat 4 - Shane Mann.

The Inside Track.

The club competitions are moving along nicely throwing up some interesting battles. In the single matchplay we look forward to Captain Brian doing battle against his good friend Liam Scally. This will be an intriguing match and hard to call, the bookies have the Scal favourite but the king of Croghan could have a say in matters.

The Jimmy Bruen.

Manager Liam Scally although trying hard with his troops in Knocknally were to come up short. No joy here in north Kildare with the weather good conditions kind the lads tried hard but to no avail, well done to all involved.

The Barton Shield.

With manager Stephen Egan Snr away on holidays it was joint manager Declan Rogers on duty in Esker Hills. Having qualified on Saturday, the Castle Barna lads were out early on Sunday.

The opposition was Mullingar and the other semi was between local rivals Esker Hills and Tullamore. It was the Barna boys who came through in their semi and qualified to play Tullamore in the final.

Word was filtering back to Daingean that the lads needed support so all available bodies made their way to Esker. Captain Brian (rooster) was crowing along with vice Captain Jimmy although injured and in severe pain tracked the boys from the start.

The Castle Barna pairings were Michael Brereton and Stephen Egan Jnr out first doing battle against ex Castle Barna member Sean Lynch and Martin Darcy. This was a close match all the way and after 18 holes played it was still tied and honours even.

So all went down to the last match where Derek Hannon and the in-form Brian McCormack Jnr were playing well. They were 1 up playing 17 after a right good battle it came down to a putt for Derek Hannon. This man small in stature but with a huge game steady himself and as the ball sunk he was celebrating a great win for the boys from Daingean. This was a huge achievement for the lads who proved once again that they can mix it up with the best and win.

Well done to all who supported and there were many young and old. It was my great privilege to witness this great display of really good golf.

We wish the Castle Barna team the very best of luck in the quarter finals which take place on the 2nd August in the Curragh Golf Club. A memorable day for the club when once again we boxed well above our weight and we hope the lads will go one better than 2011 and Forest Little.

Golf Matters.

The battle of Croghan took place last Tuesday in Castle Barna when Kildare men Anthony Lynch and Fr. Michéal Murphy PP went up against Offaly's best Captain Brian McCormack and Fr. Greg Corcoran CC.

With collars laid aside it was intense from the start reminisent of the seven aside football matches of the late 50's/60's played between Rathangan and Rhode.

The Kildare side had some mechanical problems at the 4th hole when Anthony’s trolley broke down. This happen when his back was turned and could be put down as an off the ball incident but the Offaly lads said they saw nothing.

Played as a better ball stableford points format, it was the lads from the short grass that set the pace and after 9 holes they were 5 points ahead.

As expected the Offaly boys came with a late come back with pars on 16 and 17, but the Kildare lads held out winning by 5 points. It is 1 match each now in the series the final is set for late Autumn when bragging rights will be settled for good.

The Father and Son Competition 2013.

Please note the change of date for this competition is now Saturday 22nd at 2pm.

Results/Reports June 9th 2013.

What a wonderful week of golf at Castle Barna, with the fantastic weather all week, the course was in excellent condition and led to some brilliant scores.

Highlight of the week has to be Brian McCormack Jnr’s utter destruction of the field in the Liam Scally sponsored Club Championship. Played over 36 Holes on Sunday, Brian simply blew away all opposition and recorded a wonderful 140 Gross to lead the field by 10 clear strokes.

In other news, it was also a wonderful week for Derek Hannon as he won the New Forest Senior Scratch Cup on Bank Holiday Monday. Later in the week he celebrated the birth of his son, Liam. Just for good measure Derek then finished 2nd to Brian in the Club Championship on Sunday. Congratulation to Derek & his wife on the birth of baby Liam.

This weekend to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday it’s a Father’s Day Single Stableford from 7am to 12 noon. Our annual Father & Son Trophy has been moved from next weekend to the 22nd June due to a clash of fixtures.

Inter Club News

Well done to our Michael Moore Cup Team who defeated Moate on Sunday, they now move on to play the winners of Mount Temple & Co. Longford in the next round.

Seniors Report.

It was senior vice captain Paddy Casey running the show last Tuesday for the weekly 3 ball scramble.  It was no problem for Paddy to keep the older lads on their toes and everything went off well.

Paddy a keen 25 card player ran the show like clockwork. It was that lethal trio of Tom Dunne, Paddy England, and Ger England that took the honours with a fantastic score of 58.5 nett. There is no stopping these former greats who have swung alot of timber in their time. Well done to the lads but Ger may be required to bring his birth cert next Tuesday.

The Gathering In Castle Barna.

Castle Barna Golf Club had its very own gathering of late, former greats from the Offaly GAA team of the 70's/80's arrived for a get together.

There were famous names from the past such as that great Cul Baire Martin Furlong now residing in the USA, not to be confused with Castle Barna great our own Martin Furlong (Dub).

Also in attendance was the Iron Man himself Paddy McCormack brother of our current Captain Brian. Some of the stories doing the round at the Gathering were that Brian was an even better footballer than Paddy but the older brother got all the breaks as sometimes happens.

We had the great Willie Bryan (Midfielder) along with many more it was a marvellous occasion and enjoyed by all. Martin (Dub) got the lads to sign his now famous picture that hangs in the club house the lads obliged and will be ever associated with Castle Barna Golf Club.

Mass In Castle Barna.

Last Friday evening saw the celebration of a Mass for all deceased members and family members of Castle Barna Golf Club. In attendance were co- celebrants , Fr Greg Corcoran, Fr Micheal Murphy along with Fr Paddy Byrne.

It was a lovely idea and well attended with the Daingean Choir under the stewardship of Martin Goulding adding their bit to the proceedings. Captains Brian and Phil thanked all involved, with Kieran and Evelyn providing light refreshments afterwards for all who attended.

The Inside Track.

Well done to Castle Barna's  very own Fiona Brennan along with her dancing partner Martin Lawless. The said pair were crowned champions in the recently held Daingean Strictly Dancing competition. We always knew that Fiona had the moves as we watch her glide elegantly around the tables in Castle Barna. We will be looking forward to Fiona strutting her stuff at the next presentation night in the club house.
